FAQ
A Revit family is a collection of 2D or 3D objects that share common parameters and are represented on the graphically common as well as common history. Revit has everything, including walls, floors, and annotation symbols, in a family.
Revit has three major types of families:
- System Families: Built into the software and can neither be created nor edited as discrete files. These include walls, floors, roofs, and ducts. Their properties are manipulated in the project environment.
- Loadable Families: Individuals who make their own components within the special Family Editor and save those components as external files known as RFA. They can be installed in any work, reused, i.e., doors, windows, and furniture.
- In-Place Families: Elements that are unique and custom-made within a particular project. They are very useful when only a single design situation is required and cannot be easily exported and used elsewhere.
The overall procedure consists of several major steps:
- Plan: Heat out the purpose of the family, as well as its behaviour, and the parameters required on paper.
- Select a Template: This is the Main one; the available templates are different in terms of category and a hosting mechanism (e.g., a wall or free-standing) (.RFT file).
- Define Reference Planes: These are reference planes and lines used to have a skeleton of the component to establish the boundaries and important dimensions of the component.

Generally, you will require clear product specifications that involve the general dimensions (height, width, depth), material, finish, and 2D drawings, CAD files, or photographs where applicable.
The overly detailed family of excessive complexity may also cause a huge increase in file size and, consequently, bad performance of the models and slow sync times. Simplified geometry should be preferred, and 2D representations should be based on various levels of detail (LOD) or symbolic lines.
Although it may be possible, it is still not advisable because it may result in bloated files that are difficult to manage. It is best practice to copy the existing CAD/SolidWorks files and use them as a guide to remodel the component natively inside the Revit Family Editor to take advantage of all its parametrics.
